WCGMF-Discovery | Initiative Supports
The Memorial Fund is committed to supporting the Discovery Initiative through 2009 with grants to communities and statewide organizations, technical assistance and other supports. Capacity building is a key component of the initiative and includes one-on-one supports to the communities, as well as regional and statewide convenings on topics of interest to the communities. Support to the communities is also provided through the development of self-assessment and planning tools and access to this website and the Discovery listserv.
The capacity building approach supports communities in addressing the four [1] Discovery objectives as well as the core initiative principles of [2] collaboration, [3] parent leadership and engagement. The aim is to assist in the development of community capacities to:
- Create and sustain a community-wide agenda to improve early school success
- Collect, share and utilize data
- Cultivate and engage parents
- Organize and mobilize diverse constituencies for strategic purposes
- Apply knowledge of child development to practice and policy decisions
- Leverage resources
- Manage and lead a community change process

2008 Chronic Absenteeism by District K-3
This spreadsheet reports the number of students by district who were chronically absent (defined as missing 20 days or more) in the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 school years. Note that there was no statewide definition of absence in effect for the 2007-2008 so no comparison is possible across districts. Users should contact their school district to determine the local definition of absence. For the 2008-2009 school year, the spreadsheet reflects the new statewide definition of absenteeism so comparisons across districts are possible.
