Wallingford Early Childhood Alliances, Resources and Education ("WECARE") PEP Program

PEP, People Empowering People, offers citizens the opportunity to develop self-confidence and become proactive on behalf of their children. The ten-week class program gives parents/grandparents the opportunity to participate in discussions about values, communications skills, problem solving, parenting issues, and community involvement. The class session ends with the group working on a community project and celebrating with a graduation celebration complete with ice cream and cake.

The Discovery team in Wallingford has been fortunate in having the Wallingford Community Day Care Center, Inc. as one of its earliest partners.  As Wallingford parents decided that they wanted to establish a play group for children [0-4] the Center offered space to the PLAYFUL CRUISERS, the name chosen for the activity. A group of 20 child/parent  participants gather for an 8-10 week session complete with crafts, games, stories, songs, snacks and a friendly atmosphere to learn parenting skills. The success of this first playgroup has triggered planning for a second playgroup which will hopefully be announced later this year.  The other success story has been the first parent education program, PEP, also held at the Center for parents/grandparents.  PEP, People Empowering People, offers citizens the opportunity to develop self-confidence and become proactive on behalf of their children.  Another grant has been awarded by The Children’s Trust Fund for the 2006/7 season and plans will soon be announced for the next class in conjunction with the Wallingford Adult Education program.
